Surface Palpation - Elbow, Wrist, and Hand - Muscles
Extensor Indicis Proprius Tendon
Standing, sitting or lying supine

Anterior or lateral to the patient.

May I touch your hand? ( or point to the demonstrated area ). Please turn your palm down. Straighten your first finger and keep your other fingers bent (or demonstrate, which is easier).
This muscle also may be called the extensor indicis.

Guide the patient to pronate. Guide the patient to extend and flex the index finger while keeping the other 3 fingers and thumb flexed. Observe that as the first finger extends, the tendon of the extensor digitorum (communis) is pulled medially due to the slip that connects it to the tendon of the extensor digitorum (communis) to the middle finger. Displacement of this tendon uncovers the tendon of the extensor indicis proprius. With the tendon in view with the index finger extending, palpate the tendon of the extensor indicis proprius.

At rest, the tendon of the extensor indicis proprius lies medial to the tendon of the extensor digitorum communis to the first finger. The tendon usually is not palpable during rest.
