Identify, clean and reflect the latissimus dorsi muscle. (G 1.24;N 171;Gl 3.1)

  1. Remove the deep fascia and any remaining fat. Note that a broad aponeurosis attaches the muscle to the spinous processes and iliac crest. This aponeurosis contributes to the thoracolumbar fascia. (G 1.25;N 171;Gl 3.5)
  2. Use your fingers to free the superior border of the latissimus dorsi muscle from the underlying fascia. You may need to use scissors to detach the muscle from the inferior angle of the scapula.
  3. Starting at the superior border, use scissors to detach the latissimus dorsi muscle from the spinous processes and iliac crest by cutting the aponeurosis.
  4. Reflect the muscle laterally (leave the humeral attachment intact) to expose a deeper layer of the thoracolumbar fascia overlying the erector spinae muscles. (G 1.25;N 171;Gl 3.5)
