Remove the eye and identify the extraocular muscles and nerves of the orbit.
- (ON THE SIDE WITH THE BRAIN) Use small sharp scissors to cut the extraocular muscles where they attach to the sclera of the eye. (G 7.37;N 86;41.2B)
- (ON THE SIDE WITH THE BRAIN) Grab the lateral aspect of the eye with hemostats, rotate the eye medially (adduct the eye) and cut the optic nerve. Remove the eye from the orbit.
-
(ON THE SIDE WITH THE BRAIN) Use the same scissor technique described above to remove the orbital fat (Step 7). Identify and clean the
superior rectus,
superior oblique,
medial rectus,
inferior rectus,
inferior oblique and
lateral rectus muscles. (G 7.43B;N 86;Gl 41.11)
Important Relationship
- The inferior oblique muscle passes inferior to the inferior rectus muscle.
- (ON THE SIDE WITH THE BRAIN) Identify the optic, frontal, nasociliary, abducens, oculomotor (superior and inferior rami) nerves (G 7.43B;N 88;Gl 41.12B) and ophthalmic artery.
