Identify and clean the gluteus maximus muscle. (G 6.28B;N 482;Gl 31.14)

  1. Remove any remaining superficial fascia.
  2. Remove the deep fascia while leaving the large, coarse fascicles intact.
  3. Trace the gluteus maximus muscle in the inferior-lateral direction to its partial attachment to the iliotibial tract.
  4. Identify and clean the tensor fascia lata muscle. (G 6.26B;N 481;Gl 31.16) Be careful to leave this muscle intact when you remove the overlying deep fascia. Leave the iliotibial tract intact.
  5. Trace the iliotibial tract in the inferior direction to its attachment to the proximal, lateral tibia.
