Identify and clean the muscles and erectile tissues of the perineum.

  1. Start at the pubic symphysis and blunt dissect (close to the bone) in the inferior direction towards the clitoris. Palpate the clitoris and identify and clean the bulbospongiosus muscle passing over the body of the clitoris. (G 5.60;N 395;Gl 21.27) Continue cleaning the bulbospongiosus muscle where it is positioned lateral to the bulb of the vestibule.
  2. Blunt dissect approximately 2 cm lateral to the bulbospongiosus to expose and identify the ischiocavernosus muscle. (G 5.60;N 355;Gl 21.27) The ischiocavernosus muscle becomes more prominent as you clean in the posterior direction.
  3. (ONE SIDE ONLY) Carefully (blunt dissect) remove the bulbospongiosus muscle from the perineum. Identify the bulb of the vestibule. (G 5.61;N 356;Gl 21.27)
  4. (ON THE SAME SIDE) Carefully (blunt dissect) remove the ischiocavernosus muscle the perineum. Identify the crus of the clitoris. (G 5.61;N 356;Gl 21.27) Follow the crus of the clitoris in the superior-anterior direction and identify the body and glans of the clitoris. Attempt to identify the dorsal nerve, dorsal artery and deep dorsal vein of the clitoris.
  5. Identify the perineal body (central tendon) intermediate between the vaginal orifice and the anus. (G 5.62;N 354;Gl 22.20B)
Important Relationships
  • The bulbospongiosus muscle is positioned directly superficial (lateral) to the bulb of the vestibule.
  • The ischiocavernosus muscle is positioned directly superficial to the crus of the clitoris.
