Surface Anatomy
Before starting the dissection of the back, review the following surface structures (on yourself, a classmate, or a patient, but not on the cadaver).
Skull
Vertebral Column
- Cervical region (secondary curvature)
- Thoracic region (primary curvature)
- Lumbar region (secondary curvature)
- Sacral region (primary curvature)
- CVII spinous process (the spinous process is the projection touching the splenius capitis muscle)
- T1 spinous process (the spinous process is the projection touching the splenius capitis muscle)
- Ligamentum nuchae
Shoulder Region
- Spine of scapula (this landmark is between the infraspinatus and supraspinatus muscles)
- Medial border of scapula (the rhomboid muscle is attaching to this landmark)
- Inferior angle of scapula (the teres major muscle is attaching to this landmark)
Pelvic Region
- Iliac crest (the cross-section is at the level of this landmark)
- Posterior superior iliac spine (the cross-section is at the level of this landmark)
