Remove the brain from the cranial cavity by cutting the spinal cord, cranial nerves, and internal carotid and vertebral arteries. Attempt to cut the cranial nerves short (adjacent to the brainstem) on one side and long on the opposite side.
- Use your fingers and/or a spatula to lift the brain from the floor of the anterior cranial fossa, and cut (both sides) the optic, oculomotor, trochlear, trigeminal and abducens nerves, internal carotid arteries and infundibulum. (G 7.30A;N 86;GI 34.18)
- Use your fingers and/or a spatula to displace the cerebellum and cut (both sides) the trigeminal, abducens, facial, vestibulocochlear,  glossopharyngeal, vagus and hypoglossal nerves. (G 7.28;N 103;GI 31.10) Attempt to leave a short (2mm) section of each nerve attached to the brainstem (it is more important to leave a section of each nerve with the cranial cavity).
- Support the brain with one hand and use a scalpel to transect the spinal cord and vertebral arteries. Carefully lower the brain away from the cranial cavity and cut any remaining cranial nerves, and veins draining into dural sinuses.
