Surface Palpation - Elbow, Wrist, and Hand - Bones
Hook of the Hamate
Standing, sitting, or lying supine

Anterior to the patient.

May I touch the palm of your hand? (or point to the demonstrated area).
Hold the patientís hand so you see the palm. Palpate the prominent pisiform bone first and then move diagonally laterally and distally on the line between the pisiform and the base of the index finger to palpate the deeper and less prominent hook of the hamate bone. Palpation may be easiest with the thumb.
