Surface Palpation - Elbow, Wrist, and Hand - Joints and Joint Motions
Elbow Joint Motions
Standing, sitting, or lying supine

Lateral to the patient.

May I touch your elbow? ( or point to the demonstrated area ). Please bend and straighten your elbow (or demonstrate).
With the patient relaxed, gently place the fingers around the distal arm and proximal forearm. Either guide or demonstrate motions and have the patient move through elbow flexion and extension. Observe the joint as the motions occur.
With careful observation while standing anterior to the patient, you can see slight abduction (cubital valgus) occurring with elbow extension and decreased abduction, which is adduction motion, occurring with elbow flexion.
