Surface Palpation - Head and Neck - Bones
Occipital Bone
Sitting or standing (or prone if necessary or convenient)

Posterior to the patient

Please sit (or stand). May I touch the back of your head?
(If the answer is yes) I will gently touch the back of your head (or demonstrate touching the bone).
(If the answer is no) I will just look at the back of your head.
Ask the patient/client if you may touch the posterior aspect of their head.
If the answer is yes, place one or two fingers on the occipital bone and continue to move your fingers along the extent of the bone.
If the answer is no, inspect the area visually.
