Palpating nerves can help determine the state of normalcy or pathology of the nerve by pain response and texture of the nerve. Palpation also can establish or confirm the locations where bone and nerve are in close proximity. These locations are high-risk sites for nerve compression.
Nerves are compressible cord-like structures, less firm than tendon and ligament. Compression of nerves onto bones may produce tingling in the distribution of the nerve or discomfort, including sharp, shooting sensations.
