Lateral to the patient.
Please sit (or other position). May I touch the side of your leg? (or demonstrate).
Guide the patient to sit. If given permission, place your fingers on the head of the fibula, the bony prominence on the proximoposterior fibula. Gently press just distal to the fibular head on the common peroneal nerve. If there were enough compression on the nerve, the patient will feel tingling in the distribution of the nerve along the lateral aspect of the calf and dorsum of the foot.
