13: Bones and Bony Landmarks of the Lower Limb
Introduction - Overview - Identification - Summary - Imaging
Introduction

The bony structure of the lower limb is in many ways similar to the upper limb. However, unlike the upper limb, the lower limb has a specific function, that of bipedal posture and locomotion. This task- specific function has, of course, dictated much of the anatomy of the lower limb. Notice the very deep holes in the pelvic bones for the head of the femur. This provides for a very stable articulation. This amount of bony contact allows for efficient energy transfer from the trunk to the lower limb.

The bony structure of the feet somehow manages to hold us upright, support all of our weight, and still help to maintain our mobility.
