A knowledge of the bones of the skull is essential to understanding the spatial relationships of the structures in the head. These structures are often times described in terms of their location to certain bones or bony landmarks of the skull. In addition, many nerves and vessels pass both in and out of the cranial vault, and so, there are many grooves, canals, foramina, fissures, fossae, etc. Knowing the location of these landmarks will enable you to better understand the routes of various structures, and this in turn will give you an overall view of the area in study.
Approach this exercise in a logical fashion, i.e. work through the landmarks of each bone with a visual idea of how that bone fits with its neighbors. Use a skull, your atlas, this guide and your wits - good luck!
