9: Bones and Bony Landmarks of the Upper Limb
Introduction - Overview - Identification - Summary - Imaging
Overview

In this exercise you will need to identify the bones and bony landmarks of the upper limb, the pectoral girdle, and some characteristics of the vertebrae and the sternum. All of these bones have some special function in association with the upper limb.

It is obvious why one would need to know the various bones of the upper limb, but why would anyone need to know small lines or bumps or depressions in each of the bones? These bony landmarks are sites for muscles to attach, places for nerves or arteries to run, or act as articulating surfaces. These landmarks can tell us a great deal about the individual and the activities during life. The landmarks are also very useful "navigational tools" when looking at the body using modern imaging techniques.
