Identify and clean the deep structures of the anterior neck.
- (ON BOTH SIDES) Identify and clean the omohyoid and sternohyoid muscles. (G 8.9;N 28;Gl 45.5)
- (ON THE RIGHT SIDE ONLY) Isolate the omohyoid and sternohyoid muscles from the underlying structures. Cut the omohyoid near its intermediate tendon and reflect it in the superior direction. Cut the sternohyoid muscle near its sternal attachment and reflect it in the superior direction.
-
(ON THE RIGHT SIDE ONLY) Identify and clean the
sternothyroid and
thyrohyoid muscles. (G 8.12;N 28;Gl 45.5) Reflect the sternothyroid muscle in the superior direction. Identify the
cricoid cartilage,
cricothyroid ligament (membrane) and
cricothyroid muscle. (G 8.18;N 28;Gl 45.28)
Important Relationship
- The thyroid cartilage (laminae) are positioned superior to the cricoid cartilage.
-
(ON THE RIGHT SIDE ONLY) Identify the
trachea and the
thyroid gland
(lobes and
isthmus). (G 8.18;N 76;Gl 45.25A)
Important Relationships
- The thyroid gland (isthmus) is positioned directly anterior to the trachea.
- The thyroid gland (lobes) is positioned directly lateral to the trachea.
