Identify the subdivisions of the pharynx and the muscles of the pharyngeal wall.

  1. Identify the nasal pharynx, oral pharynx and laryngeal pharynx. (G 8.29B;N 64;Gl 44.27)
  2. Identify the superior, middle and inferior constrictors. (G 8.27B;N 67;Gl 44.29) Use the greater horn of the hyoid bone to assist you in identifying the level of the middle constrictor. The superior constrictor is continuous with the buccinator muscle.
  3. Identify the stylopharyngeus muscle and glossopharyngeal nerve (adjacent to the stylopharyngeus muscle). (G 8.27B;N 67;Gl 44.30) Attempt to identify the pharyngeal branches of the vagus nerve.
