Clean the tendons and arteries (you may remove the veins) on the dorsum of the foot. (G 6.60B;N 517;Gl 34.40)

  1. Trace the tendon of the extensor hallucis longus muscle  to the base of the distal phalanx of the 1st toe.
  2. Trace the tendons of the extensor digitorum longus as they cross the dorsum of the foot.
  3. Identify and clean the extensor hallucis brevis muscle. Trace its tendon to the base of the proximal phalanx of the 1st toe.
  4. Identify and clean the extensor digitorum brevis muscle (deep to the tendons of the extensor digitorum longus muscle).
  5. Return to the anterior tibial artery. Trace this artery distally into the foot (G 6.61B;N 518;Gl 34.40) where it becomes the dorsalis pedis artery. Identify the lateral malleolar artery. Attempt to demonstrate the anastomosis between the perforating branch of the fibular artery and the lateral malleolar artery.
  6. Identify the deep plantar artery  at the distal termination of the dorsalis pedis artery. The deep plantar artery anastomoses with the plantar arterial arch (lateral plantar artery).
  7. Attempt to identify the medial malleolar, medial tarsal, lateral tarsal and arcuate arteries.
  8. Note the distal aspect of the deep fibular nerve.  It terminates near the bases of the proximal phalanges of the 1st and 2nd toes.
