Clean and identify the muscles of the fourth layer of the foot. (G 6.77C;N 522;Gl 34.41C)
- Separate (blunt dissect) the oblique head of the adductor hallucis muscle from the underlying (superior) structures. Transect the oblique head near its proximal attachments and reflect the muscle toward the great toe.
- Identify the interossei muscles.
- Return to the lateral plantar nerve and artery. Trace the artery distally to where it forms the deep plantar (arterial) arch. Attempt to identify the deep plantar artery (from the dorsalis pedis artery) anastomosing with the deep plantar (arterial) arch. Identify the deep branch of the lateral plantar nerve at its origin.
