  1. Identify the superior lateral and medial genicular arteries. These arteries typically arise at the level of the proximal attachments of the gastrocnemius muscle.
  2. Identify the lateral and medial sural arteries entering the two heads of the gastrocnemius muscle.
  3. Identify the inferior lateral and medial genicular arteries. These arteries typically arise at the level of the proximal attachment of the soleus muscle.
  4. Identify the origin of the anterior tibial artery.
