On both sides of the cadaver, identify the external oblique muscle, its aponeurosis, the inguinal ligament and the structures associated with the superficial aspect of the inguinal canal. (G 4.8;N 245;Gl 13.4A)

  1. Use your finger to carefully dissect the loose areolar connective tissue from the spermatic cord (or round ligament) where it emerges from the superficial inguinal ring.
  2. Carefully clear away any remaining superficial fascia to demonstrate the medial and lateral crura, and intercrural fibers of the superfical ring.
  3. Identify the ilioinguinal nerve emerging from the superficial ring adjacent to the spermatic cord (or round ligament). (G 4.15;N 253;Gl 16.37A)
