Identify and remove the right and left lungs. (G 3.24;N 195;Gl 10.7)
- Use your fingers to tear any pleural adhesions between the lungs and the thoracic wall.
- Identify the root of the lung (the collection of structures entering or exiting the lung surrounded by pleura). Note the fold of pleura, the pulmonary ligament, extending inferior from the root of the lung.
- Identify the phrenic nerve passing anterior to the root of the lung. You do not need to clean the phrenic nerve at this time.
- Use your fingers to surround the root of the lung and tear any adhesions. Place a zip tie around the root of the lung. Lift the root of the lung with the tie and use a scalpel to cut the root of the lung as close to the lung as possible. Do not cut into the lung and do not cut the phrenic nerve.
- Tear any remaining adhesions and remove the lungs from the thoracic cavity.
