Posterior Approach to Shoulder Joint
- Identify the tendons (distal attachments) of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus and teres minor muscles. (G 2.33;N 411;Gl 25.21B)
- Reflect the infraspinatus tendon and identify the fibrous joint capsule and glenoid labrum. (G 2.46C;N 413;Gl 25.13B)
- Identify the transverse scapular and coracoclavicular ligaments. (G 2.33E;N 411;Gl 25.13B)
Important Relationships
- The infraspinatus muscle (tendon) passes directly posterior to the shoulder joint.
- The supraspinatus muscle (tendon) passes inferior (deep) to the acromion of the scapula and the subacromial bursa.
- The supraspinatus muscle (tendon) passes directly superior to the shoulder joint.
- The teres minor muscle (tendon) passes directly posterior to the shoulder joint.
