Identify the subdivisions of the pharynx and the muscles of the pharyngeal wall.

  1. (ON BOTH SIDES) Identify the nasal pharynx, oral pharynx and laryngeal pharynx. (G 8.24;N 63;Gl 38.29)
  2. (ON BOTH SIDES) Start at the midline (the sagittal saw cut) and blunt dissect in the retropharyngeal space. Separate the pharyngeal wall from the prevertebral fascia. (G 8.36;N 63)
  3. (ON BOTH SIDES) Identify and attempt to clean the superior, middle and inferior constrictors. (G 8.23B;N 67;Gl 38.30) Use the greater horn of the hyoid bone to assist you in identifying the level of the middle constrictor. The superior constrictor is continuous with the buccinator muscles.
  4. (ON BOTH SIDES) Using the midline approach, isolate and identify the stylopharyngeus muscle. Blunt dissect the posterior-lateral aspect of the external pharyngeal wall approximately 2 cm superior to the greater horn of the hyoid bone. (G 8.23B;N 67 and 71;Gl 38.31) Identify the glossopharyngeal nerve adjacent to the stylopharyngeus muscle. Attempt to identify the pharyngeal branches of the vagus nerve.
