Lying supine, sitting, or standing
Ask the patient to remove shoes and socks to allow direct palpation on the skin.
Lateral to the patient.
(With the patient lying supine) May I touch your big toe to guide your toe motion? (or point to the area).
Please move your big toe up and down. If this is difficult, just move all of your toes up and down. (Most people can not move the big toe without moving the other toes).
Please spread your toes apart and then let them relax and come together.
Starting with the patient relaxed and lying supine (or other position), either demonstrate and ask or guide the patient to do the following motions:
- Hallux extension and flexion, bringing the big toe toward the body (in supine) and away from the body, respectively.
- Hallux abduction and adduction, bringing the big toe toward the other foot and then away, respectively.
