Surface Palpation - Ankle and Foot - Other Soft Tissues
Anterior Talofibular Ligament

Sitting
Ask the patient to remove shoes and socks.
Anterior to the patient.
 
Please sit down. May I touch the side of your ankle? (or point to the demonstrated area).
Please point your toes down and in toward your other foot.
Guide the patient to sit and possibly rest one foot on the examinerís thigh or other support surface. With the patient relaxed and with permission, place your fingers on the area just anterior and medial to the lateral malleolus. Ask the patient to plantarflex and invert the ankle and foot or passively produce these motions. Palpate the anterior talofibular ligament as it is stretched. This ligament is very thin.
VH - Leg and foot skeleton with the anterior talofibular ligament
on one side add the calcaneofibular ligament, peroneus tertius, extensor digitorum longus and brevis, abductor digiti minimi muscles and tendons superior and inferior peroneal and extensor retinacula on one side
