Surface Palpation - Ankle and Foot - Other Soft Tissues
Dorsalis Pedis Artery (Pulse)
Sitting, sidelying, or lying supine
Ask the patient to roll up long pants and remove shoes and socks.
Medial, anterior or posterior to the foot being examined.

Please sit down (or other position). May I touch the top of your foot? (or point to the area).
Please relax.
Guide or ask the patient to sit down. With the patient relaxed and with permission, place your fingers on the dorsum of the proximal foot. This artery/pulse is usually weak but palpable on the dorsum of the proximal foot. The artery is often located lateral to the tendon of the extensor hallucis longus but can be in other locations. Various degrees of support in dorsiflexion or stretch of the artery in plantarflexion may be helpful to locate this artery.
VH - Leg and foot skeleton with the lower limb arteries
Add extensor digitorum longus and brevis, extensor hallucis longus, peroneus tertius, and anterior tibialis, and their tendons on one side and superior and inferior extensor retinacula
