Surface Palpation - Elbow, Wrist, and Hand - Bones
Area of the Carpal Tunnel
Standing, sitting, or lying supine

Anterior to the patient.

May I touch your wrist? (or point to the demonstrated area).
Hold the patientís hand so you see the palm. The carpal tunnel is the groove for the long flexor tendons to the fingers and median nerve. The tunnel is bounded by the pisiform and hook of the hamate medially and the scaphoid and trapezium bones laterally. Palpation may be easiest with the thumbs.
