Surface Palpation - Introduction

Procedure for Palpating Bone

Olecranon Process of the Ulna

Palpating bony areas can help determine the state of normalcy or pathology of the bone or tissue overlying the bone. Bony projections are used as landmarks to assess posture and movement.

Palpate bones at the anatomical location with the patient positioned to maximally expose the structure. Bones are hard structures. They usually are not tender to palpation, although some are covered by soft tissue that is sensitive to pressure.
