Surface Palpation - Knee and Leg - Bones
Retropatellar Surface
Lying supine
Ask the patient to wear shorts to allow direct palpation on the skin.
Anterior to the patient.
 
Please lie down on your back. Try to relax the muscles around your knee. May I the touch your knee cap? (or demonstrate).
Guide the patient to lie supine with the knee slightly flexed and supported under the knee to relax the quadriceps. If given permission, gently move the patella medially and laterally. While the patella is moved medially (laterally), gently press into the medial (lateral) aspect of the posterior surface of the patella.
With joint degeneration, palpation of the retropatellar surface may be painful.
VH - Retropatellar surface ñ add the patellar ligament and quadriceps and the patellar retinaculum on one side
