Surface Palpation - Spine - Bones
Coccyx
Standing or standing with one foot supported on a chair or sidelying with the top hip flexed.
If you wish to palpate on the skin, provide a private room for assessment. The patient is asked if he/she is willing to lower pants/shorts/skirt, if needed, for direct palpation on the skin. While the skin can not be viewed with clothes covering the area, the coccyx usually can be palpated to assess pain response over clothing.
Posterior to the patient.

(After explaining the need to palpate on the skin, if needed, ask the patient if he/she is willing to lower pants/shorts/skirt while being covered on the anterior pelvic area. e.g..). Possible trauma or damage to the tailbone can be evaluated more accurately if you lower your pants/shorts/skirt Ö (and demonstrate the level, which is to the level of the coccyx). Would you feel comfortable doing this? If not, I can assess some things without moving your clothing and with pressure from my fingers. Please stand or put one foot on the chair or lie on your side and bend your hip. May I place my fingers on your tailbone? (You can use a skeleton if available).
Guide the patient to drape and be in the position you want. If given permission, place your fingers on the patientís coccyx. Assess symmetry, normal placement, stability, pain, etc. of the coccyx.
This area of the body is very sensitive related to modesty. Allow adequate time for explanation and to request permission to touch and then to drape.
