Surface Palpation - Spine - Bones
Hyoid
Sitting, standing, or lying supine
Anterior to the patient.

Please sit down. May I touch the front of your neck? (or point to the area).
Ask the patient to gently tuck his/her chin. Very gently place your finger tips on the superior surface of the hyoid bone. This feels like resting your fingers on a shelf. Ask the patient to swallow. Let your fingers move up and then down during the swallow.
