The external genitalia of the female consist of two rounded eminences or lips that were once part of the anterior abdominal wall, the labia majora. Inside or medial to these lips lay another set of smaller folds of delicate skin called the labia minora.
The two sets of genital lips circumscribe the openings of the urinary tract, the urethr and, the vagina. They also encase the female organ of sexual excitement, the clitoris. There are many pairs of glands that are found within and near these genital lips. (Figure 4-4)
