Identify and clean the adductor magnus muscle. (G 6.25;N 480;Gl 31.11D)
- Trace the "hamstring portion" of the adductor magnus to its distal attachment (adductor tubercle).
- Return to the femoral artery and vein. Trace these vessels distally through the adductor (subsartorial) canal until they pass from anterior to posterior through the adductor hiatus. The adductor hiatus is directly deep to the distal attachment of the adductor magnus. Attempt to identify the saphenous nerve as it accompanies the femoral artery in the adductor canal. The saphenous nerve does not pass through the adductor hiatus.
Important Relationships
- The profunda femoris artery is positioned anterior to the adductor magnus muscle.
- The medial perforating branches of the profunda femoris artery pass medial and posterior to the femur (shaft).
