Clean and identify the muscles of the second layer of the foot. (G 6.75C;N 521;Gl 33.16B)

  1. Cut the tendons of the flexor digitorum brevis muscle at the level of the metatarsal-phalangeal joints. Attempt to leave the nerves and arteries intact. Reflect the flexor digitorum brevis muscle toward the calcaneus.
  2. Identify the tendons of the flexor digitorum longus muscle.
  3. Identify the lumbrical muscles arising from the individual tendons of the flexor digitorum longus muscle.
  4. Identify and clean the flexor accessorius (quadratus plantae) muscle attaching to the common tendon of the flexor digitorum longus muscle.
  5. Identify and clean the medial and lateral plantar nerves and arteries  adjacent to the flexor accessorius (quadratus plantae) muscle.
