Reflect the anterior abdominal wall to expose the peritoneal cavity and the abdominal viscera. Do not damage the left inguinal canal or the dissection of the right inguinal canal.

  1. Use forceps to lift the anterior abdominal wall away from the viscera near the left costal margin at the level of the umbilicus. Use a scalpel to make a small incision in the anterior abdominal wall. Insert your finger and lift the anterior abdominal wall away from the underlying viscera.
  2. Extend the incision in the inferior medial direction to the midline of the cadaver. Do not damage the inguinal canal. Keep the incision parallel (but 3 cm superior-medial) to the inguinal ligament and end approximately 3 cm superior to the superficial inguinal ring.
  3. Extend the incision in the opposite direction. Follow the costal margin around the cadaver and stop near the right anterior superior iliac spine.
  4. Reflect the anterior abdominal wall towards the cadaver's right lower extremity.
